You could feel the anticipation in the air as the sold-out crowd took their seats at la Place des arts in Cheticamp on Sunday afternoon. And, they were not disappointed! First time MC, Stacey Bourgeois, introduced the opening act for this Celtic Colours event, Hailee LeFort from Margaree, now living in PEI, performing with a new trio featuring Ward MacDonald and Jesse Périard. The group, together for less than a year, had the audience tapping their toes right from the start.
Within minutes they were joined on stage by La Swing du Suête. This troupe is comprised of dancers ranging in age from 10 to 18, all students at École NDA in Chéticamp. Since 1997, the group has performed across the Maritime provinces as well as in Quebec, Ontario, Alberta, and Vermont and Louisiana in the U.S. The dance numbers are perfectly polished!
The following performance was the Ivan Flett Memorial Dancers hailing from Winnipeg, Manitoba. Their father took over the MC duties to introduce the three siblings: Michael (19), Jacob (17), and Cieanna (16) Harris. They perform traditional dances of the Red River Jig mixed with modern dancing known as the hip hop jig. The audience was especially enthralled with their high-energy performance of The Devil Went Down To Georgia. They were accompanied by Brendan Chartrand playing the fiddle and one could hear a keyboard, only to realize he was playing it at the same time with his feet!
Sisters, Danielle (fiddle) and Céline (piano) Doucet are well known locally and internationally. La Swing du Suête dancers joined them to the audience’s delight. From there Ian MacDougall, Hilda Chiasson, and Patrick Gillis took the stage. Stepdancers, Melanie MacDonald and Amanda MacDonald, showed their well-honed skills, which all led to the finale. All the afternoon’s performers came back on stage and wowed the audience with a spirited closing that left everyone on their feet and wanting more.
