Sarah Rankin’s Sight Point

Artist statement
As a young girl I would sit on my father’s studio couch and watch him paint and tell stories of the past. He always had a stack of old photographs and family albums close by for inspiration. I would look through these photos and try to imagine what life must have been like 100 years ago in rural Cape Breton when most of these photos were taken. One album stood out to me that came from a farm in Margaree, Cape Breton. Images of children and animals playing outside in the tall grass and a mother watches from the house. A young couple bringing a baby home from a baptism. A young man standby proudly next to his prized horse. A mare cleaning her minute-old colt.
The album images always stayed with me. So small and intimate. Looking at the album this past winter it showed me that life really hadn’t changed that much from when I was young. The people in the photos had the same hopes and fears that we have today. By painting the photos, I wanted to bring their stories back to life and look closer at the past when the future seems so uncertain. Most of these images are from 1914 to 1920s. Painted in acrylic and mixed media.
Biography
Born and raised in rural Cape Breton, Sarah C. Rankin began an early art life watching her father paint from his lap as a baby while he sang and told stories of Cape Bretons past. Her aunts would sing old Gaelic songs to her and her large family, which instilled a love of traditional Cape Breton music, which she plays on piano. She studied fine art at Mount Allison university for three years and came back home to learn her people’s native tongue, Scottish Gaelic. She continues to paint in Mabou Coal Mines, where she finds most of her inspiration from the people, the sea, and the hills. Her mediums include oil, acrylic, water-colour, charcoal, graphite, India ink, and photography.
