Twice a year, The Inverness County Singers perform a series of highly-anticipated concerts; one in the spring and one during the Christmas season.
The spring concerts began on May 10th at St. Michael’s Church in East Margaree, which was followed by a performance, on May 11th, at St. Mary’s Church in Mabou. The next concert will be May 15th, at St. Margaret’s of Scotland Church in Broad Cove as well as a performance at the Inverary Manor.
This spring’s theme is “Songs of Peace.” Musical director, Laurel Browne, explained to the audience at the beginning of the concerts, that this theme was chosen because of “what’s been happening in the world, especially since last fall” in reference to the Israel–Hamas war.
Browne’s selections of songs included a mix of beautiful and powerful traditional spirituals, such as “This Little Light of Mine” and contemporary songs, including “Bridge Over Troubled Water” by Simon and Garfunkel.
Songs were either performed by the 10 members of the Young County Singers, the three members of the youth group Vocal Motion, the 29 members of the Inverness County Singers, or all of the above, with musical accompanist, Lawrence Cameron, on piano. The audience was also invited to join in and sing along, which they certainly did to the final song “All You Need Is Love” by The Beatles.
