Whycocomagh Waterfront Centre bustling with activity

-by John Gillis

Since its renovations which took place over the last three years the Whycocomagh Waterfront Centre has been bustling with activity. Last Saturday evening from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., for example, the centre hosted a Meet The Artists event which showcased the creations of some 25 or so artisans.

“It was a one-off show held just for one evening.  We had a wonderful turnout, so we may look at doing something like this again,” said Rosanne Campbell, one of the visual artists and organizers of the event.  For a ten dollar admission price patrons were treated to a glass of wine, punch and cheese.

Featured at the centre was a wide array of paintings, wood carvings, drawings, quilts and more.

“Art is a sideline for many of the people featured in this show, many of whom are from Inverness County and the greater Whycocomagh community,” said Campbell who has been painting now for some three years.

Terry Gillis is an organizer with the Whycocomagh Waterfront Centre Association.  She told The Oran that the centre is making an effort to host a variety of events to attract and appeal to different interest groups.  They are promoting these events through advertising, posters and through their newly created website (

“We have a number of interesting events coming up including Grow Local Eat Local gardening sessions for anyone interested, Spring Into Action for Seniors and more,” said Gillis.

There is also going to be a pub night on May 3rd with Eddie Cummings as well as a big Canada Day event as well.  There is a yard sale coming up, and be sure to keep July 28th in mind as 23 fiddlers will be coming from Scotland for an event on July 28th.

The Waterfront Centre will also be a venue for some Kitchenfest events later this summer as well as an appearance by multi-instrumentalist J.P. Cormier.

Gillis says whatever your interests are, be sure to keep the Whycocomagh Waterfront Centre in mind.
