Immediate action on Highway 223 required! – June 23, 2026

Dear Editor,

Having never previously written a letter to any editor, this is my second letter to the editor of the Oran within as many weeks.

I am writing this time in relation to disrepair of sections of Victoria County Highway 223, between Little Narrows and Iona; a well traveled stretch of secondary highway.

Over the past three years, I have twice contacted Provincial Public Works Halifax, written to the NS minister of highways, and spoken to the Victoria county supervisor of Public Works in relation to this issue.

Over this same term, I have had to replace three otherwise good tires for broken belts, a set of struts, and a sway bar. One can only imagine how many others have experienced similar unnecessarily expensive, and potentially dangerous situations.

Just within the past 24 hours, I have encountered two more related incidents…

The first occurrence was yesterday afternoon, when a tourist couple were parked on the shoulder just SE of my driveway. The driver had hit a large pothole, badly damaging both an expensive rim and a run-flat tire. He indicated that he had not seen the  pothole, and asked “How far am I from civilization?”

Upon driving east towards home this morning, an elderly couple from Switzerland were parked on the shoulder of the road, with the gentleman taking photos of a pothole. He was holding a piece of his vehicle, and advised that he had not seen this unmarked pothole. He advised also that he had not experienced  such unmarked potholes anywhere else he had driven in either Nova Scotia or New Brunswick.

To those with the required authority, please have these potholes marked immediately to prevent further such dangerous incidents, and complete the required road repairs to this section of highway at earliest opportunity.

Thank you.
