The current conversations around the building of a data centre in Point Tupper are creating divisions between a need for jobs and a need to protect our water, air and health. This is vitally important, but there is also another maybe even greater concern regarding the company who will be leasing that possible building.
Anthropic just released an IPO for investors with a warning about the need to slow down the development of A.I. and implement guardrails. The CEO, Dario Amodei’s warns investors that A.I. Could exhibit “self-preserving behaviours,” including attempts to “resist shutdown,” to “conceal or manipulate information” and behavior “resembling blackmail.”
In September, he posted an essay on-line with specific warnings for the world about the “catastrophic damage” if A.I. Bots managed to get loose and create a “swarm” to take over the internet. There is a global race to develop a technology which we do not fully understand. This information is easy to find, and maybe we should be having those discussions first before high fiving each other about the so-called great investment.
Has any official who was present at the big announcement on Oct. 16th tried to gather information from other locations across the country with operating data centres? Do we want to be a part of something like this? More information is needed.
