Regarding a story January 7th, 2026 – January 14, 2026

Dear Editor,

I read the article in the Oran on January 7th, regarding Brent Beaton, the man with Down syndrome who is in hospital instead of his home.

I have some life experience and understanding regarding people considered marginalized.

As noted by Brent’s sister, this whole situation displays overt mismanagement and intolerance. Brent is a vulnerable individual who appears to be a target of discrimination.

Once he was eligible for hospital discharge, why wouldn’t the administrator welcome him back to his home of 20 years? If his care needs increased, surely supports were available as indicated by the government mandated Remedy program?

I am also perplexed as to why the CEO of the Inverness County Municipal  Housing Corporation and its board of directors did not enforce the goals of the Remedy Program to keep people with disabilities in their homes. Who is culpable here? As taxpayers we deserve more transparency.

I think Brent Beaton and his family deserve timely answers and a heartfelt apology.
