It is with profound and absolute sadness that the family of John Lester “Baby John” MacDonald announces his peaceful passing on July 15th, 2026, in Inverness Consolidated Memorial Hospital, at the age of 81. Born on August 14th, 1944, in Lyndhurst, England, during the Second World War, John began his remarkable journey in life under extraordinary circumstances. In 1946, he and his mother crossed the Atlantic aboard the Queen Mary to meet his father’s family and begin a new life in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, where he would eventually make his home in Harbourview, Port Hood, a community he loved deeply. John began lobster fishing in the 1960s with Jackie Dan J, a career that eventually became not just his livelihood but his life’s passion. He was happiest on the water and was well known throughout Port Hood and the surrounding communities for delivering fresh mackerel and haddock to friends and neighbors. His kindness, generosity, and willingness to help others made him a familiar and welcome face to so many. His determination and strong will was an inspiration to all who knew him. Above all else, John was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He was a humble, kind-hearted man whose greatest joy was spending time with, and helping those he loved. He was the best dad anyone could ask for; John treasured family gatherings, visits over tea and biscuits, harbour hopping, scenic tours, sharing stories, and creating lasting memories with family and friends. John also loved the open road. Some of his happiest days were spent riding his motorcycle around the Cabot Trail with his dear friend Jimmy “The Bear” MacIsaac. A fan of classic country music, he could often be found listening to Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, and “the boys,” whose songs perfectly matched his easy-going spirit. John was a faithful member of the Knights of Columbus and was a proud supporter of the Chestico Museum and St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Port Hood. He believed in giving back to the community that had given him so much. He was predeceased by his beloved parents, John Alexander “Benny Tom” MacDonald, a Second World War veteran of Port Hood, and Kathleen May (George) MacDonald of England, whom he adored. John leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife, Catherine Ann (Martin) MacDonald; children, Joshua, Luke (Samantha), Kathleen, and Peter; treasured grandchildren, Alena, Grace, and John; brother, Mark (Nancy); along with many extended family members, lifelong friends, neighbours, and all whose lives were enriched by his kindness and friendship. John will be remembered for his gentle nature, quiet humility, generous heart, and unwavering love for his family, friends and community. Whether sharing stories over a cup of tea, lending a helping hand, or greeting someone with a warm smile, he made everyone feel welcome. His legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched and in the waters and shores of the community he loved so dearly. Visitation will be held in Port Hood and Area Resting Place on Sunday, July 26th, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. A funeral mass celebrating John’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday July 27th in St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church, Port Hood. David Valentine Paulen, 83, of Mitchell, and formerly of Margaree Valley, Nova Scotia, passed away peacefully at Stratford Perth Rotary Hospice on Wednesday, July 15th, 2026. Beloved husband of Blanche Paulen; dear father of Roger Paulen (Pascale) of Ottawa and Carolyn Paulen (Scott) of Halifax; loving grandfather of Sarah, Alex, Emma, and Cameron; dear brother-in-law of Kathleen Ayres (Jim), Sandra Burton, Jim DiSabito, and Clyde Burton. He will be missed by his nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his parents Clarence and Mary Paulen; brother-in-law Willard Burton, and sister-in-law Eleanor DiSabito. David was a long-time, well-known square dance caller both in Ontario and the East Coast. He will be remembered for his sense humour, easy going nature, and most importantly, his love of family.
