GRAHAM

Vincent Thomas Graham: On November 21st, 1953, a gentle soul was born to the late Katherine (“Kaddie”) and Vincent Graham. Throughout his life, Thomas, known as Tommy, to most, became a quiet steadfast presence for his family, his community, and his church. In a world too often marked by haste, division, and self-interest, Tommy remained a true gentleman: kind, humble, patient, generous, and unwavering in his faith and character. Tommy is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Deborah Bunyan; his children, Garret Graham (Meghan), Kelsey Settle (Christopher), and Hillary Sutherland (Stephen); his cherished grandsons, Graham, Harrison, Jacob, Emery, and Lee; his brother, Allan (Vi); his sisters, Nancy (Sam), Nora, and Norma; his sister-in-law, Donna; his brother-in-law, Chris; his brother, Kenny (Shauna); his brother-in-law, John (Adrienne); his brother-in-law, William; his sister-in-law, Tammy (Bobby); his sister-in-law, Francis (Dave); his sister-in-law, Carol; many nieces, nephews, and cousins who loved him; and, most especially, “The” Godchildren, Ricky Graham and Sidnie MacDonnell. Tommy was predeceased by his parents, Kaddie and Vincent Graham; his infant brother, Colin; his brother, David; his sister-in-law, Kathy; and his niece, Carly. Tommy’s heart always belonged to Judique, the community that shaped him. As a boy, he spent winters playing hockey on frozen ponds and springs on the baseball diamond. His love of baseball stayed with him throughout his life, and it was a joy to watch him play with various teams over the years. A gifted athlete, Tommy was an outstanding centre fielder whose love of the game never faded. He found happiness in life’s simple pleasures: horses, cheering on the Toronto Blue Jays, listening to John Prine and the J. Geils Band, and fiddle tunes, tracing his family’s Scottish and Gaelic roots through genealogy, and spending summers at the Inverness Raceway, where he enthusiastically cheered on his horses, always hoping to see them in the winner’s circle. One of Tommy’s greatest joys was golfing with his son, Garret. Every spring, summer, and early autumn, father and son could be found on the Dundee course together, chasing that elusive hole-in-one (which Garret finally got one day) and sharing countless conversations and laughs. They were truly best friends. His twin daughters, Kelsey and Hillary, were the apple of his eye. Tommy treasured the families his children built and shared a close and loving relationship with his children’s spouses, Christopher, Stephen, and Meghan. Nothing, however, brought him greater pride than being “Grampa” to his five grandsons – Graham, Harrison, Jacob, Emery, and Lee, who loved his “bubble” candy. Tommy excelled academically, graduating near the top of his high school class before earning bachelor’s degrees in commerce and education from Saint Mary’s University in Halifax. It was at St. Mary’s that he also began a courtship with the woman who would become the love of his life. For forty-seven years, Tommy shared a remarkable marriage with his beloved wife, Deborah (“Deb”). Together they built a home filled with love, laughter, faith, and family. The loss of Tommy leaves a space that can never truly be filled, but the love they shared will remain a lasting gift. Family was the center of Tommy’s life. Beyond his unwavering devotion to those closest to him, he quietly cared for his neighbors and his community. Whether he was mowing a lawn, shoveling a driveway, picking up a newspaper for someone who was ailing, lending a helping hand, or supporting a worthy cause, Tommy was always there when someone needed him. Most of his acts of kindness, however, went unnoticed. He never sought recognition or praise, believing that true kindness was best expressed through action. A lifelong parishioner of St. Andrew’s Parish, Tommy’s faith guided every aspect of his life. It was a faith inherited from generations before him and one he lived with humility, compassion, and quiet conviction. Tommy will be remembered by his many friends and former colleagues at the department of transportation, as well as by members of the Cape Breton West Islanders hockey team, where he proudly served as vice-president for several years. He also dedicated many years to helping organize the Golf Classic that raised funds for the Celtic Music Interpretive Centre, a cause close to his heart, and counting the money for many “Judique on the Floor Day” dances. He found joy in everyday routines and lifelong friendships. He cherished his morning walks with John, Michael, and Richard; his daily drives along the shore; and conversations with his best friend, Danny. He loved talking horses with Arnold, stopping by the store to visit Wayne and Marie, chatting with Richie at the back of the church, teasing John Donald Cameron about the Braves, Lester about the Cowboys, and Darren about the Montreal Canadiens. Tommy lived with integrity, humility, generosity, and unwavering faith. He also had a wonderful sense of humor. He leaves behind a legacy not measured by accomplishments alone, but by the countless lives he touched through simple acts of kindness, steadfast friendship, and unconditional love. He made the world gentler simply by being in it. The little chickadees who ate out of his hand and followed him around will surely miss his gentle presence. In keeping with Tommy’s wishes, there will be no visitation. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 10th, in St. Andrew’s Parish Church, Judique, with Father Allan MacMillan officiating. Burial and a luncheon will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations in Tommy’s memory may be made to raising money for new doors for the church, Inverness Cares, the Storytellers’ Gallery, or a charity of one’s choice. Online condolences may be made to: www.invernessfuneralhome.com.
