U13 C.B. West Warriors pile on the hits to sweep Hants North

The Cape Breton West Warriors feasted on Hants North pitching on Saturday to sweep the Jays 12-1 and 14-0 in U13 Bluenose League baseball action.
Played in Port Hood at the Dave Muise Memorial ball field, the 11-man Warriors had multiple hits and runs up and down the order.
Meanwhile, the Warriors’ pitching staff – which is everyone in the lineup – threw strikes and trusted the defence to make the outs.
“Our bats definitely touched them up today,” said Cape Breton West coach Brent MacEachern after the second game of the doubleheader. “Landon (Fraser) threw a great game for us, and in the first game, Luke (MacEachern) had a no-hitter going into the fifth.”
MacEachern said the team is playing well defensively, but there’s still work to be done before provincials.
“We could be sharper running the bases. There were a couple of times we got into trouble. They like to steal, but the Hants North pitchers were really tough to steal on.”
In the opening game, Carson MacEachern led the Warriors attack, going three-for-three on base hits and crossing the plate twice.
Luke MacEachern and Campbell MacIntyre each scored a pair of runs, reaching on a hit and a walk.
Owen Heukshorst had the only extra-base hit, driving in two runs with a double in the third.
Also scoring single runs were Landon Fraser, Callum Chisholm, Lance Heukshorst, Kenny Gillis, and Jesse Gillis.
In the second game, Ben (The Barber) MacDonald took charge of the offence, batting a home run short of the cycle with a triple, double and single, and scoring three runs.
Warriors catcher Owen Heukshorst had a pair of base hits before coming out of the game in the third inning with a hand injury.
Jesse Gillis tripled and walked to score a pair of runs. Also scoring twice were Luke MacEachern, Campbell MacIntyre, and Kenny Gillis.
Lance Heukshorst and Carson MacEachern each scored a run.
Cape Breton West currently sits fourth in the 13-team Nova Scotia Bluenose League with a 5-2-1 won-lost-tied record.
“We’re going to be in the top tier of the A division for provincials,” noting that the provincial hosts haven’t been determined yet and the Warriors are considering making an application.
This weekend the team is in Riverview, New Brunswick, for a tournament. They play Cornwall (PEI) on Friday then Dartmouth and Summerside on Saturday.
The Warriors have three doubleheaders yet to play at home. Next up is the Hammond’s Plains A’s who will be in Port Hood on Saturday, July 27, for games at 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.
