Five U18 Major Islanders receive education bursaries

-by Bill Dunphy

Post-secondary education got a little bit easier for five members of the Cape Breton West U18 Major Islanders.
The Nova Scotia U18 Major Hockey League announced its academic awards winners, recognizing the players who were best able to play hockey at an elite level while maintaining a high academic standing.
“These young men are in the rink three or four times a week for practice and then play weekend games,” said Islanders academic mentor John Campbell.
“Some of the marks these players maintain are unbelievable. And the league has been great in supporting the academic side of it. Hockey is one thing, but education is key.”

The big winner on the Islanders was Cheticamp’s Daniel LeBlanc, who won the $1,000 Dianna Thornton Education Fund scholarship, presented to a player who best combines academic achievement, leadership potential, and hockey ability.
LeBlanc, who attends NDA and is entering grade 12 next year (a bad birth date makes him too old for U18 next season), also won the Cape Breton Eagles team scholarship of $500. This award is presented to a player with a 75 average in grades, a member in good standing of the NSU18MHL, and in his final year of eligibility.
“I’m not sure about that 75 average,” said Campbell. “Daniel has one of the top marks in grade 11 anywhere with an average of 95 per cent or more!”
Jack Hartery, of Port Hawkesbury, will graduate from SAERC in June and will receive the Eastlink scholarship award of $1,000. This award is presented to a player who best combines sportsmanship, hockey ability, and who practiced the principles of Fair Play on and off the ice.
Mulgrave brothers Blake and Luke Hadley, who will also graduate from SAERC next month, were co-winners of the $1,000 IceJam Tournament scholarship.
Earlier this spring, the Islanders announced that Judique’s Daniel Gillis, who graduates from Dalbrae in June, was the recipient of a $500 team scholarship.
