Huskies girls tame Mustangs for berth at D3 soccer provincials

This shot was too hot for the Musquodoboit keeper to handle as CBHA Huskies striker Breton Crowdis scored the only goal her team would need on Saturday to win the Div. 3 qualifier 3-0.

With each round a little tougher, the Cape Breton Highlands Huskies are playing with confidence in their quest for a School Sport Nova Scotia Division 3 girls soccer crown.
Their latest achievement came on Saturday on their home pitch at Terre Noire where they defeated the Musquodoboit Mustangs 3-0 in a provincial qualifying match.
The Huskies put the pressure on the Mustangs from the start, resulting in an early chance by Breton Crowdis who rang a shot off the post in the first couple of minutes.
Undaunted, in the 13th minute, Courtney Aucoin on the right side found Maddie Gale in the middle with a nice cross, and Gale hit Crowdis with a pass to the keeper’s right and this time the only thing she hit was net for what would be the game-winning goal.
In the 33rd, Ava Ross picked up a goal kick at midfield, dodged a Mustangs defender, and struck from outside the 18-yard box to give the Huskies a 2-0 lead at the half.
The Mustangs keyed in on Crowdis in the second half as the biggest threat and after a couple of hard tackles, one of which resulted in referee Tyler Paturel showing Crowdis a yellow card, Huskies coach Aurel LeLièvre subbed a player in for her.
If a player received a second yellow, resulting in a red card, then that player would be suspended for the final two games of the season.
What the Mustangs didn’t understand was that any number of Huskies were a potential scoring threat.
In the 66th minute, Maddie Gale added an insurance goal on another nice cross from Aucoin.
The Huskies played out the final 24 minutes mostly in the Mustangs half of the field as goalkeeper Laura Morrison kept a clean sheet for the 3-0 win.
“Every game gets a little harder but that’s what we’re made for,” said Aucoin, one of six grade 12s on the team, including Summer Deveau, Rebecca Hunt, Makayla Jenkins, Abby Morrison, and Emily Ross.
Silver medalists last year, Aucoin said they know what it takes to win.
“We’re really strong in all areas, we have a good coach and good team spirit. Our strength is our abiluty to work together; if you don’t have teamwork, you don’t have anything. Last year we tried our best and did all we could, and we will do the same thing this year, hopefully with a better result.”
The provincial tournament gets underway at New Germany Rural High School this Friday at noon with the host team playing Tatamagouche in the first semifinal. Following the opening ceremonies, the Huskies play Bridgetown at 2:30 p.m.
The losers of the semifinal games play for bronze on Saturday at 10 a.m. The semifinal winners play for gold at noon.
