Funding in place for Inverness Hospital CT Scanner

-by Rankin MacDonald

The funding is finally in place to bring the new CT scan to the Inverness hospital within the next six months.

Renovations to house it are in the planning and the staff is in training.

The dream, the promise, has now become reality.

On Wednesday of last week, the Nova Scotia Department of Health and Wellness approved funding for the Inverness CT Scanner in the amount of $1.1 million.

The department pointed out that soon patients in Inverness County will be able to get CT scans close to home and not have to travel to Sydney or Antigonish.

One of the major reasons a CT scanner was approved for Inverness was the determination of the people of the area who pushed to get the new technology to be included in the new health centre in Inverness.

Premier Stephen MacNeil promised it in the last election campaign and he has delivered.

MLA Allan MacMaster was also a champion for the cause.

The government funding is $1.1 million and the community will come up with 25 per cent of the cost.

“People in the Inverness area are keen to see this scanner in place, and so am I,” said Health and Wellness Minister Leo Glavine. “It will be an important addition to the hospital and will ensure people in the community don’t have to travel so far from home when they need a CT scan.”

Staff are being trained to operate the scanner, which should be in place in about six months according to the minister.

The Inverness Hospital Foundation couldn’t be more excited.

“This is the great news we have all been waiting for,” says Inverness Hospital Foundation chair Marilyn MacDonald. “This is such a worthwhile cause. So many people in Inverness County will benefit for having this service so close to home.”

The Inverness Hospital Foundation will be responsible for fundraising the community portion (25 per cent) of the CT Scanner equalling $384,000 and the provincial government will fund $1.1 million (75 per cent).

“This is the news we wanted,” explained MacDonald. “We didn’t want to begin fund-raising until we knew for sure the CT scanner was approved. Now that we got our news, we will start fund-raising for the CT scanner soon.”
