Letter: A personal attack

Dear Editor:

As one of the millions of Canadians very concerned about climate change, I thought I should offer a rebuttal to Neil MacEwan’s latest screed against Greta Thunberg.
Instead of dealing with the facts, MacEwan pathetically relies on personal attacks against her. It’s a bit rich that he questions the 16-year-old Thunberg’s lack of ‘credentials.’ Thunberg herself has one clear message: unite behind the science. She has never claimed to be an expert, but wants all of us and particularly our leaders to heed the growing warnings of the scientific community. MacEwan further disparages Thunberg by attacking her ‘emotional problems’ including autism and OCD. I guess according to MacEwan if you have autism you aren’t worth listening to.
I do have some sympathy for MacEwan’s cry of hypocrisy against many environmentalists. As someone who has given up flying, I’ve seen many an ‘environmentalist’ jet off for a skiing vacation overseas or to sunnier climates during winter and honestly, I don’t know what to say. But MacEwan goes off the rails by claiming there is a movement to take us back to the standard of living of the Middle Ages complete with insect eating and rationed heating (and air conditioning, lucky us!) inside our tiny hovels.
As a father of two young children, I’m chilled by what I read from the International Panel on Climate Change. What kind of future will be left for my children in this warming world? Powerful storms, drought, climate refugees, forest fires, sea level rise, the list goes on. Hating Thunberg is one (again, pretty pathetic) thing, but MacEwan doesn’t even seem to accept that climate change is real and that we will have to (at least) drastically reduce our greenhouse gas emissions in a short period of time to avoid the worst.
And still the climate deniers march on, even in Inverness County. Maybe there is a cult after all.
