Grade 12 student Tyler White recently entered the Greatest Baker, an online baking competition that relies on public voting. Let’s show him our support. You get one free vote a day but you can also pay to vote more and the money goes to support kids with cancer.

Tyler White is baking happiness one cake at a time.

White is a grade 12 student who loves baking and has spent the past year pushing his creativity through cakes.

“I mostly work with cakes, whether that’s over-the-top, indulgent chocolate cakes loaded with drips, fillings, and toppings, or lighter, more decorative designs, like soft pink cakes finished with strawberries,” said White in an interview on Monday night.

“I enjoy working with special requests and experimenting with flavours, including lemon raspberry, caramel pumpkin, and chocolate hazelnut,” he explained.

“I bake my own cakes at home, and I’m also proud to work as a baker at the Dancing Goat Café in Inverness,” he added.

White recently entered the Greatest Baker, an online baking competition that relies on public voting, after seeing an ad online and deciding to give it a try.

“What started as a ‘why not?’ moment has turned into an exciting opportunity, and I’m now competing in the quarter-finals with strong support from my community,” said White.

Tyler White’s parents are Barbara Caprio-White and Jamie White, of Inverness.

Responses from the formal Greatest Baker Competition:

Tell us about your signature bake and why it’s your most popular treat.

“Back in July, I decided to make my first ever cake. It was not amazing, but I had certainly impressed myself! I then had people (family friends) asking me to make them cakes for events. I initially declined, but was convinced to do it for the experience. My love for the craft took off and I have made many cakes since then! I make all of my cakes from scratch and decorate beautifully and intricately with my buttercream. I have a little “business” and Instagram account called tylas.caked.up”

Who is your favorite person to bake for and what do you make most for them?

“I like baking for my family the most, because I love sharing my projects with them and getting their genuine and constructive feedback. I also feel less stressed and more encouraged to try new things and techniques to build on my skills and capabilities! And of course, I get to eat the cake too! Baking for my friends and family is a way for me to give back to them and thank them for encouraging my creativity and pushing me to grow as person, a baker, and a member of my community!

How would you use the $10,000?

“If I was chosen for this award, it would make a huge difference in helping me pay for university and reach my goal of going to medical school. I’m currently in grade 12 and work part-time baking at a local café and bakery, and I’ve been saving as much as I can to put toward my education. Even though I’m working hard, the cost of university and medical school is very high. This prize money would help take away a lot of that stress and allow me to focus more on my studies and future career!”

The Andrew McDonough B+ (Be Positive) Foundation honors the life of Andrew McDonough. Andrew battled leukemia, septic shock, and complications of childhood cancer for 167 days before passing away on July 14th, 2007, at the age of 14.

Andrew’s B+ blood type became his family and friends’ motto throughout his fight against childhood cancer – to “Be Positive.”

The B+ Foundation is about kids helping kids fight cancer – raising money through events on college campuses, local events like 5 Ks and golf outings, corporate partnerships, merchandise sales, and more – to provide financial and emotional support to families of children with cancer nationwide and fund critical, and cutting-edge childhood cancer research.

Voting in the quarter-finals ends on Wednesday, January 21st, at 11:00 p.m. AST.

“We’re so proud to have such talented bakers at the Dancing Goat! If you have a second, please vote for Tyler,” said the owners of the Dancing Goat Café and Bakery.
