The Cheticamp-style rug hookers unveiled their latest creation, which will travel around Canada next year promoting the Acadian community.
“Le Tapis de la CFA” is a 34-by-24.5 inch hooked rug that took 14 artisans 120,000 loops and 111 hours to complete. The team of rug hookers included: Dora Aucoin, Paulette Chiasson, Betty Ann Cormier, Isabelle Cormier, Adrienne Desveaux, Brenda Doucet, Raymonde Doucet, Henri-Édouard Deveau, Marie-Cecile Haché, Éveline LeBlanc, Lucienne Lefort, Yvette LeLièvre, Laurette Poirier, and Sylvia Roach.
Gilles Deveau designed the piece, and Sylvia Roach dyed some of the 3.5 pounds of wool/yarn required to make it. The work illustrates a map of Nova Scotia, highlighting the province’s francophone communities. One hundred coasters accompany the piece. They began work on the rug on Oct 6th, and it was unveiled at La Salle des hookeuses at le Canton culturel at a Christmas party on December 14th.
The project was commissioned by the CFA (communautés francophones accueillantes) région de Chéticamp (Welcoming Francophone Community.) The purpose of the CFA is to attract and help settle French-speaking newcomers into the community. With cultural, recreational, and educational opportunities, the CFA aims to create a welcoming, inclusive environment for new residents. Employment initiatives aim to help them secure work. Betty Ann Cormier is the CFA coordinator and will use the hooked rug as a promotional tool for the Acadian community as she attends meetings and conferences across the country. The CFA is an initiative by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, and they sponsored the piece.
